Located 3 miles north of St Estephe, Coufran is notable for an unusually high proportion of Merlot in its wines. Robert Parker includes the 1989 among the best three vintages of the 1980's, noting that it "... exhibits structure, deep color, and plenty of depth." According to Wine Spectator: "A generous wine for drinking now. Lots of ripe fruit, such as prunes and red berries, on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a caressing, velvety texture. Ripe and delicious yet slightly dry on the finish.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal." (05/99)
