According to the Wine Spectator: "Bright and lively, with juicy black cherry and raspberry fruit, it's appealing for its fruitiness and subtle complexities that build on the finish, ending with ripe tannins and a creamy oak sensation. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2009. 800 cases made." (06/04) The owner of York Creek is Fritz Maytag (Of Anchor beer fame); he has been farming the property since 1968, selling grapes from his 125-acre mountain vineyard to many outstanding names in the California wine industry (Ridge Vineyards among them). York Creek began making a small amount of its own wine in 1992, and today less than 1,000 cases of Meritage are bottled a year produced entirely from estate grapes grown on Spring Mountain above St. Helena. Hillside vineyard blocks range in altitude from 1,200 to 2,100 feet. Needless to say, the 2001 is spectacular and worthy of a few years in your cellar. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.
