While there is a marked upturn in ripeness across the 2000 vintage, this mouthfilling wine is stuffed with so much wonderfully well-extracted fruit that its very ripe bias is in no way a liability. Deep, fleshy, genuinely juicy and filled out with loads of sweet oak, it is simply delicious right now with very rich foods such as lamb stuffed with wild rice and foie gras, but it has only just begin to grow into itself and comes with easy predictions of another five to eight years of improvement.
Medium red. Ripe, deeply pitched nose features blackberry, rose petal, loam, espresso and chocolate. Sweet, thick and lush but lively; offers the fleshiest texture of these 2000 Pinots. Firm tannins are nicely covered by fruit on the lingering, nuanced aftertaste. From the estate's oldest Pinot vines, planted in 1975.
The finest Pinot from Dehlinger's portfolio is the as yet unnamed 2000 Pinot Noir, a 430-case cuvee produced from the estate's oldest vines. It exhibits the most flesh and completeness of these cool year offerings. The bouquet includes aromas of sweet cherries, strawberry jam, and flowers. The wine is ripe and medium-bodied, with admirable finesse, elegance, length, and unobtrusive acidity. It will drink well for 7-8 years.
