Lush, velvety, creamy, bursting with berries, fragrant flowers, and soft wafts of vanilla, the 2001 Knox is a wine for hedonists. The aromas are dominated by red fruit and berries, but there is the usual Santa Maria hard spice (juniper berry, black pepper, cardamom), earth, lavender, and mushroom. The structure of the 2001 will allow it to age in spite of its young vine provenance. The mouth is intense and acidic with disengaged red berries, citrus and spice. The high elevation source of the fruit, low yields, careful handling and minimal processing after almost two years in barrel makes this wine one for the cellar. Made from 50% Dijon clones and 50% traditional California selections planted by Jim Clendenen at the higher elevations of Bien Nacido Vineyard, this wine seems to grow in stature with every vintage, much like Jim's own son, Knox, who lends the wine his name. 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "right medium red. Delicate aromas of cherry, rose petal and shiso. Sappy, dense and generous in the mouth, with enticing flavors of raspberry and spices. Has a Chambolle-like floral lift. Long, building finish features smooth tannins and lovely aromatic character." (Jan/Feb '04)
