Tasting Notes

This is first-class Guatemalan rum is made from virgin sugar cane honey--the first press of the sugar cane that's boiled down to thicken--rather than molasses, which is a byproduct of the sugar-making process. This results in a finer, sweeter, smoother rum. Aged in the solera method, like sherry, the Zacapa Centenario is very dark--mahogany with coppery tints--and has a clove, cocoa, cinnamon and orange peel-scented nose. The palate is sweet and smooth, with cocoa, orange and honey flavors and a sensuous, viscous texture. It finishes long and smooth. It received 97 points from the Beverage Testing Institute and a Gold Medal at the 2007 International Cane Spirits Festival.

Zacapa is the rum that changes peoples mind about rum. Distilled from partially processed Miel de Cana, the Zacapa Distillery is one of the highest altitude and highest quality rum distilleries in the world. Distinctly in the Spanish style, the special distillery near Tulula, creates rums of exceptional quality aged in the traditional solera style. Opulent and ultra rich, no question this should be in the running for world's greatest rum.

One of the greatest aged rums in existence, this Zacapa is sipper. After having played the Guatemala Jazz Festival numerous times, I've become very familiar with the great rums of that country, and the Zacapas are the top-tier. Their 23-year is affordable and absolutely delicious.

A great rum that ranks in the upper tier. If you keep fine rums, this is a must to have in your collection.

First thing I noticed about this rum were the viscous, honeyed legs gently cascading down the side of the glass into the mahogany body, as I swirled the liquid. Aromas of English Christmas pudding, dried fig and black currant, and chocolate covered cherries are followed by cardamom, cherries, and bourbon-flavored pecan pie on the palate. I do get some harsh tannins from the oak, but overall, I really enjoy this unique rum.

Toffee, vanilla, smooth and sweet. Strongly agree with Susan's review. However, the ethereal nose makes it feels more like a cognac than a rum. Drink on the rocks or with coke. 4.5 stars, but 3.5 for the price.
