*Superb/Highly Recommended* The first nosing passes detect deep scents of paraffin, linseed oil, corn oil, and salted butter; further air contact adds aromas of grapes, baked pear, sautéed almond, and dark toffee. The palate entry is semisweet, cocoa- and black-tea-like; at midpalate tastes of honey, brown sugar, and old oak are added. Ends up semisweet, honeyed and nutty. A beauty.
Marie Duffau is a benchmark Armagnac producer. The grape composition for the 1973 Bas Armagnac is 70% Ugni Blanc, 20% Bacco, 5% Colombard, and 5% Folle Blanche. In keeping with tradition, only the highest quality fruit, harvested from the best soils of the Bas Armagnac were used to make this Armagnac. It was distilled slowly in small batches at low temperatures to promote the retention of flavors, acids, and character in the spirit. Oak ageing adds tannin, color, and spice. Bottled at cask strength, the 1973 is very special Armagnac; elegant, complex, powerful, and refined.
