The whisky begins sweet and creamy, with notes of vanilla, honey, and ripe malt (reminiscent of a malting floor). Then the Laphroaig signature peat smoke, seaweed, tar, and medicinal notes emerge. Bottling at 48% and without chill-filtering keeps the whisky from being dulled down. A whisky that is very dynamic. Nicely done. (Vol. 15, #2)
Bold and overwhelmingly smoky, this golden single malt was matured twice, first in large casks and then transferred to smaller “quarter casks,” for more contact with the barrel wood. Look for plenty of peat smoke on the nose and palate, with undercurrents of honey and fleeting red fruit, plus an astringent iodine note. It’s tannic, drying and full flavored.

Very good. Similar to the Laphroaig 10-year-old. Less sweet, less medicinal, more smoke, more wood. Feels crisp in your mouth, almost refreshing. The sweetness and smoke play tug-o-war with each other and are less integrated than in the 10-year-old.
