The sensational 2002 Clio, a blend of 70% Mourvedre (60-year old vines) and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon (25-year old vines), exhibits a dense purple color along with a rich, sumptuous bouquet of toasty vanillin, blueberries, blackberries, roasted espresso, chocolate, and earth. Full-bodied, with sweet tannin, fabulous concentration, a multilayered mouthfeel, and a long finish, this is a tour de force in winemaking. It provides strong evidence of what can be achieved in this once backwater/boondock viticultural region of Spain. (RP)
This plush red offers sweet fruit flavors of strawberries and raspberry jam. It fills the mouth, but the tannins are gentle, layered with chocolate and vanilla oak notes. Berries and spices linger on the finish. Modern style, but quite restrained and harmonious. Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Cabernet Sauvignon. (TM)
Full red. Perfumed aromas of red berries, cinnamon and cedar. Plump and spicy, with sweet plum and redcurrant flavors accented by oak and firmed by ripe acidity. Very suave and lush for the vintage, and already a delicious drink. (ST)
Decant this red a couple of hours before serving so that the oak scents can blow off. Then the old-vine monastrell flavors of caramelized fig and marron glacé will float to the fore, supported by strong, tight tannins and alcohol. Age will bring balance to its force.
