Medium red. Complex, terroir-driven aromas of roasted red fruits and humus. Fat, roasted, intensely flavored and a bit rustic in a positive way; classic superripe Grenache, with a complicating note of dark chocolate. Tannins are thoroughly ripe.
The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a terrific nose of spice box, cherry jam, pepper, and assorted berries. It is medium to full-bodied, with plenty of glycerin, moderately sweet tannin, a fat mid-palate, and a dense, thick, powerful finish. Already accessible, it promises to last for another 10-15 years.
