*Two Stars* This union of vintner and vineyard has been a CGCW favorite in the past, and, in this outing, it is another remarkable example of big, fully ripened California Syrah at its best. Brimming with very sweet fruit and decked out with a full measure of rich oak, it is surprisingly well-balanced given its very ripe style, and it allows a look at more subtle aspects of violets, leather and spice. Full, but nicely polished with a long finish that is underpinned with just the right degree of firming tannins, it will please fans of showy, fully extracted Syrah...
The dark ruby/purple-hued 2003 Syrah Roll Ranch is even better than the 2004. Its up-lifted, floral bouquet (which reveals notes of blackberries and flowers) is followed by a wine with fleshy, succulent, full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin, and low acidity. (RP)
