Intensely aromatic and redolent of raspberries, cassis, cocoa and touches of loam, this very rich and powerful young wine follows through with wonderfully concentrated flavors that are every bit as big and fully filled as expected. Although its sheer sense of mass and immediacy will hold it in reasonable stead as a near-term partner to meats on the bone, it has the strength and the structure to grow even better with time and deserves a wait of at least five years if not ten.
The soft 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label exhibits an opaque purple color. It appears to be fully mature, but with its concentration and richness, it is capable of lasting another 10-15 years. Lots of cassis, incense, licorice, toasty oak and spring flower characteristics are abundantly displayed in this lovely, rich, pure, opulent wine. This enviable and venerable winery high on top Spring Mountain straddles the Napa and Sonoma county lines. These three sensational 2002s are all capable of lasting another 10-15+ years. (RP)
Deep, smoky nose combines currant, graphite, tobacco and leather, plus greener notes of currant leaf and green olive. Quite backward and firmly structured, with flavors of currant, tobacco leaf, mineral, coffee and herbs. Finishes with a light dusting of tannins. The only one of these Pride 2002s that struck me as a bit green and dry in the sense of traditional Bordeaux. But this is also quite closed and minerally. I'd give it five or six years of additional cellaring. (ST)
There's a consistent cherry richness running straight through this wine, a completeness that grows more generous with air. It's simple and satisfying, an iconic Napa Valley cabernet. Age may bring out the mountain-grown complexities in the tannin, though this is delicious to drink now with any red meat.
