1998 Antagonists: This was a surprising effort (93% Grenache, 5% Syrah and 2% Viognier) from a challenging vintage throughout California. The dramatically higher percentage of Grenache has given it a mature Chateauneuf du Pape personality. Loads of kirsch liqueur, pepper, lavender and spice box are all present in this elegant yet complex, extremely perfumed, medium to full-bodied wine. It is fully mature and should be drunk over the next 4-5 years. The bouquet of this wine is stunning. (RP)
Full red. Fraise des bois, raspberry, hickory smoke, licorice and minerals on the nose, along with exotic oak scents. Lush, sweet and oaky in the mouth, with concentrated red fruit (redcurrant, raspberry, cherry) flavors and a rather suave texture. Finishes with smooth, rather elegant tannins. (ST)
