The climate in the Ponzo Vineyard is fairly cool and mild due to the influence of the Pacific Ocean, coupled with the morning fog in early summer. The breezes continue to keep the temperatures moderate during the warmer, late-summer months, and offer good conditions for fruit ripening. The vineyard is planted on flat, sandy loam soil and is dry farmed, producing deeply concentrated fruit. Due to the age of the vines, the clusters are quite small and low-yielding. This is some seriously old vine fruit here folks (more than 82 years!), and the Zin made from it is extremely concentrated and mouth filling. This Zinfandel has abundant fruit aromas and opens with its traditional raspberry flavors fully pronounced with layers of white pepper, vanilla and spice that are characteristic of this vineyard. Sweet and round, this wine expands on the palate giving a mouthful of jammy richness. The warm, toasty oak surrounds the sweet impressions that carry on and linger to produce a long, balanced finish.
