Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Bright, saturated medium ruby. Sexy, complex perfume of blackberry, licorice, exotic herbs, earth and animal fur. Densely packed, vibrant and savory; large-scaled but smooth, offering a compelling combination of dark fruit and sauvage animal qualities. Finishes broad, powerful and very long, with chewy tannins in need of several more years of bottle aging. (Drink between 2020-2034) (ST)
Very lively and teeming with life with hints of leather, liquorice and elderberries. Rewarding. Not cheap. You need to find a friend to share the two-bottle purchase with. Round and layered. The evolution of this should be fascinating. Very dry finish. 17.5/20 points.
Finding information to share about Sean Thackrey's wines is about as challenging as locating Thackrey's Bolinas property, which is located an hour north of San Francisco in western Marin County. Thackrey's rustic winery-in-a-eucalyptus grove is only accessible via a twisting road that ends at the Pacific's edge, according to the Wine Spectator. The highly-allocated results are made in Thackrey's distinctive style: powerful and intense with rugged tannins using methods culled from ancient texts, mostly translated (Thackerey reads seven languages). The 2005 Orion is an inky Rhône-style blend with an intense dark fruit nose punctuated by hints of graphite and earthy sweetness. Full-bodied, this is a boutique gem that's hard to find, even harder to get your hands on and worth every penny.
