Carlisle's 2005 Sonoma County Syrah is made from 70% Bennett Valley fruit, with 23% Russian River Valley Syrah and 7% Paso Robles Syrah folded into the blend. Most of the grapes came from cool-climate vineyards, and the wine was aged in French oak, of which 36% was new. The resulting wine glints like black rubies in the glass, almost opaque, and the aromas are equally dark: blackberry and black cherry and just a hint of vanilla. Concentrated on the palate, the wine has a supple texture that finishes with fine-grained tannins. Showier than the 2004, but lower in alcohol. Decant briefly.
