Good bright, deep red. Knockout nose combines cherry, licorice, white pepper and flowers, plus a suggestion of crushed berries. Dense, sweet and sharply delineated, with an urgent, tangy quality to the flavors of red berries, spices and pepper. Another 2006 with outstanding energy and length. The wine's electric finishing notes of ginger and blood orange reminded me of a 2007, but the Groffiers' 2007 version of this cuvee seems yet riper. And this one may be longer. (ST)
The Groffier 2006 Chambertin Clos De Beze smells beguilingly and site-typically of rose petals and licorice, dark berries and game. It reflects the challenges of hail in a certain leanness, but is well-concentrated and handsomely lean. Like the Bonnes Mares, one wonders whether this will fill-out with some time in bottle. Insistently pure-fruited, vigorously penetrating, and transparent to spice, carnal, and stony nuances, it certainly promises at least a dozen years of further fascination, and would probably be best left untouched for the next 3-4 years. (DS)
Here the wood treatment is almost invisible as the highly spiced red berry fruit and underbrush aromas are allowed to shine as are the fresh, vibrant, intense and precise medium weight flavors that are slightly less concentrated and culminate in a somewhat dry finish this is probably due to the hail. This is classy and refined but lacks the same outstanding length of the Bonnes Mares.
