91 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good bright, full red. Good energy to the rather Burgundian aromas of spices, underbrush and game. The most precise and lively of these 2006 pinots in the mouth, displaying delicate, tangy wild strawberry and cherry flavors complicated by spices and flowers. Supple in the middle palate but nicely firm on the back end." (May/June '09) 90 points Burghound: "A very subtle touch of wood frames elegant, pure and airy aromas that blend together mostly red berry fruit notes that combine with a hint of vegetal that adds complexity before merging into detailed, focused and balanced middle weight flavors that are quite serious in demeanor at present as the tannins are firm without being aggressive and they also serve to provide shape to the admirably long and moderately austere finish. This is clearly in need of a few years of bottle age first as it's definitely built to age. Lovely but definitely built to age. Lovely but definitely not intended for near-term consumption." This is the third "Deer Camp," Etude's first vineyard-designated wine. It comes from a unique parcel tucked away in the northwest corner of Carneros, named for an old deer camp structure. Brooding blueberry and cherry fruit aromas mingle with notes of toasted almonds and bay. In the mouth, vibrant black cherry fruit and spice are delivered on a magic carpet of velvety tannins and juicy acidity. Elegantly structured, this wine should continue to develop in bottle for at least five years.
