This is a floral take on Merlot, in both scents and flavors; owing at least in part to the inclusion of 7% Petit Verdot. The wine gathers strength and fleshes out as it warms in the glass, and layers in darker notes with smoke and coffee and tar. A steely style, muscular and tight, it smoothes out nicely with breathing time, and shows excellent aging potential. (PG)
The purple-colored 2007 Merlot contains 7% Petit Verdot. The nose offers up a whiff of new oak along with scorched earth, mocha, black currant, blackberry, and a hint of chocolate. This leads to a medium to full-bodied, opulent wine with layered, savory fruit, succulent flavors, plenty of fine-grained tannin, and a lengthy, pure finish. (JM)
Bright, full red-ruby. Subdued but pure nose offers cassis, violet, licorice and a whiff of menthol. Juicy, suave and smooth but quite dry; not at all a fleshy style of Merlot. In fact, this minerally midweight is made in a distinctly claret-like style. This is blended with 7% Petit Verdot; past vintages included some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc. (ST)
Firm in texture, with a tight grip of tannins on the smoky blackberry and currant flavors, persisting on the finish. Needs time to soften. (HS)
This is a savory Merlot, drawn from Seven Hills, Loess, Pepper Bridge and Mill Creek Upland fruit. It leads with a meaty scent, like air-dried, spice-rubbed beef; the flavors are dense and savory. With air, the dried plum and cherry fills out the formidable structure, a clear indication of a wine that will age.
Dusty but ripe blueberry fruit. Rich, velvety, dense fruit. Rich but well balanced and very good length. Dark aftertaste. Long and moreish. 17+/20 points (JH)
