Tasting Notes

The 2006 Ladera Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of Cabernet (92%), Malbec (3%) and Petite Verdot (5%) from the Lone Canyon Vineyard and the Ladera Howell Mountain vineyard. While Cab character surely dominates, the addition of Petite Verdot thickens the mid-palate and the Malbec contributes dark fruit flavors and aromas. Blackberry and raspberry notes are lifted by subtle floral tones and slightly spicy pepper highlights. Extracted, soft and plush, this is drinkable and bold now, but with the structure to age for about a decade.

This is one of the better values in Napa Cabernet. The nose shows forward aromas of black fruit, currant, and a little savory herbs, thanks to the small amount of Petit Verdot. These are echoed on the palate, held together by firm, grainy tannins and a long, earthy finish. It seems to be slightly more Bordeaux-like in flavor and structure than the average Napa Cab, and will benefit from decanting.
