I obviously underestimated the awesome 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes last year when I gave it an estimated rating of (90-93). Its saturated plum/purple color is followed by aromas of incense, spring flowers, blueberries, boysenberries, kirsch, licorice, and smoked meats. Seriously packed and stacked, this full-bodied wine possesses splendid concentration, superb purity, and a finish that lasts nearly a full minute. This is indeed a 'wow' Chateauneuf du Pape that is approachable now (because of the wonderful sweetness of the fruit and aromatic intensity), and should age beautifully for two decades.
This has it all--the ripe, showy blackberry, boysenberry and fig fruit of the vintage backed by loads of graphite, roasted chestnut, maduro tobacco and hoisin sauce notes. The long, velvety finish lets the dark tobacco note play out.
Bright ruby. Smoky aromas of blackberry, mulberry and fruitcake, with a strong mineral undertone. Rich, fleshy dark berry flavors are energized by zesty minerality and peppery spice, with no rough edges showing. Finishes with supple tannins, an alluring floral quality and excellent clarity and persistence.
