Tasting Notes

90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Viña Alberdi from the famed La Rioja Alta contains some declassified fruit. The wine is a classically-styled Rioja with a nose of earth, mushroom, mineral, cherry, and blackberry. This is followed by an elegant wine with a silky texture, good depth and concentration, considerable complexity, and a seamless finish. It is at its peak now and will continue to drink well for another five years. It personifies finesse." (Feb. 2009) Now composed of 100% Tempranillo (no more garnacha in the blend), this is a delicious Alberdi, the best I've had in a few years. And also at the lowest price! The wine is still bottled unfined and unfiltered; that's what the 20 full-time staffers who do nothing but rack wine are for! For a classically styled Reserva bottling from Rioja, it does not get much better than this. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer).

This 2003 Rioja is drinking just as it should. Fresh cherry friut with spice and a touch of dried herbs on the finish.

This is a ripe and complex bottle of Tempranillo from a very hot vintage. Red and black fruits, herb, mineral and a woodsy/forest floor quality lift this wine out of the ordinary. There is a touch of very mild tannin on the finish of this versatile and delicious gem. Drinking well now.
