An amazing base wine, the 2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape has soaring aromatics of incense, bakers spice, licorice, grilled meat and toasted bread that are mixed with perfumed red fruits. The palate is full bodied, silky smooth, balanced and long with fine grained tannins adding edge and precision. This fantastic wine should drink well for 10 to 12 years. (JD)
Showing the quality of the vintage, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is an incredible wine. Possessing the classic kirsch liqueur, incense, flowers and licorice aromas and flavors that always show here, it flows onto the palate with a jaw dropping good texture that carries massive amounts of fruit, beautiful mid-palate concentration and a layered, silky feel. It's hard to resist now, but it will be better in another couple years. (JD)
I like Châteauneuf-du-Papes like this that are not overdone. This is really balanced. Spicy and rich, with meat and dark berries. Blackpepper too. Full bodied, with soft tannins that turn velvety and caressing. So much going on.
Superripe and friendly, but also sleek and refined, with a gorgeous mouthfeel to the black currant, crushed plum and black cherry fruit, all laid over black tea and shiso leaf notes. The finish is long and perfumy. (JM, Web Only—2009)
Dark ruby. Ripe dark berries and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of anise and musky herbs. Fleshy, gently sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors are firmed by fine-grained tannins that fade into the fruit on the back end. Very smooth and seamless in texture, with very good closing sweetness and spicy persistence. (JR)
Middling healthy ruby. Rudely healthy exuberant fruit. Open, easy, delightedly healthy, ripe fruit. Lots of fun here. And neither tannins nor alcohol are aggressive. Fresh finish.
