Tasting Notes

This is the single best invention we have seen for opening old bottles of wine with long and fragile corks! It is a combination of an Ah-So style opener and a worm. Between them, they reliably work together to grab the cork, and remove it intact. It is hand-made in the U.S., from a design by Mark Taylor, and named to honor Sommelier Yves Durand. It is not cheap. But if you are opening a priceless old bottle, it is well worth it to have an intact cork come out of that cherished wine bottle. Swear by it for old Bordeaux, Burgundy or California wines! Nothing is perfect, and no one bats 1000, but this device comes as close as we have encountered.

Simply the best corkscrew we have ever offered, and the best I've ever used.

This excellent tool revolutionized opening old wine for me. It used to be that I planned on the corks disintegrating into a crumbly mess and I would have a tea strainer on hand to aid in the decanting of the wine. Now, I can even get bottles of port from the sixties open without breaking the cork! Be warned, this is not an all purpose corkscrew, and the same support that it brings to an old cork will jam a young cork in the bottle. If you have occasion to open great old wines, you should definitely own the Durand Corkscrew!

I actually "invented" this device many years ago for my own use when faced with extracting challenging corks from older bottles of wine often with challenging corks. I took the screw portion of a 2-piece manual Screwpull (very fashionable at the time) and combined it with an Ah-So. Well, the Durand does exactly this in fine fashion as a beautifully crafted cork extractor. Don't baulk at the price. If you are opening fine older wines, I know of no more indispensible tool. It's simply a must-have device for any serious wine collector!

I was gifted with one of these nifty devices, and I was impressed at once with the craftsmanship and overall design. I recognized at once that it was a good idea... but would it work? My coterie of wine friends (who call ourselves Pompous Twits) have, among them, many older wines that they share for special gatherings or for gifts. So, I have had several opportunities to use my new toy, and in each instance, it worked perfectly. Whereby I have always sworn by the common two-pronged ah-so openers for older wines, there are times, such as with a wet and slippery cork, that it has difficulty finding a purchase on the cork, or ends up pushing the cork into the bottle. The worm screw on the Durand prevents this unfortunate occurance and keeps the cork in place while the ah-so portion allows easy extraction. It is a fine device for old wine lovers, and makes a terrific gift for friends whose older wines you would really like them to share with you!
