In 2007, there was another small crop with only 1,700+ cases produced, from a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. An absolutely staggering nose of blueberries, white flowers, crème de cassis, licorice and graphite is followed by a full-bodied, opulent, multidimensional wine that is seamless. Incredible fruit intensity, purity and depth of character make this one of the great, great classics in the Spottswoode lineup. This wine can be approached now, but it is nowhere near full maturity, and should evolve for at least another 30-40+ years. Owners of this vintage have liquid gold in their cellars. (RP)
What a nose on this wine. So intense and powerful, with cassis, currants, and licorice. Amazing stuff. Full and very soft, with wonderful soft yet focused tannins and juicy fruit. Pure and beautiful.
Smooth, rich and understated, offering a subtle mix of ripe, full-bodied currant, blackberry and wild berry flavors that are deftly balanced, with a dash of cedary dill-laced oak. Slow to unfold, but in doing so offers great depth, concentration and complexity. (JL)
Good full medium ruby. Thoroughly ripe yet energetic aromas of boysenberry, blackberry and bitter chocolate. Big, rich and sweet, with lovely intensity and balance and an element of minerality that expands with aeration and contributes to an impression of clarity and grip. Really resounds on the very long, sweet finish. A great vintage for this wine. (ST)
Deep, bright ruby. Very ripe but reduced nose shows a chocolatey ripeness to the primary flavors of cassis, blueberry and licorice. Densely packed and powerful, conveying a tactile texture to the sweet flavors of black fruits, tobacco and spicecake. Firm acidity gives clarity and definition to the middle palate of this very concentrated wine. Finishes savory, deeply spicy and firmly tannic, with terrific length and grip. This makes the '06 seem dry. (ST)
The Novak family farms 40 acres of vines behind their Victorian house in western St. Helena, producing Cabernet that’s notable for its elegance rather than overt richness or power. There’s coolness to this 2007, with scents that hint at the forests of the Mayacamas. The fruit is bright with cranberry edges, red cherry, plum and floral notes, lasting with minerality. The balance and refreshing savor marks this as a wine that will age with grace.
