K&L Notes

David Perkins is at it again with a new batch of whiskey created from two very different ryes--a 16 year old combined with a 2 year old. The result is a charming conjunction of youthful spice with the wood-polished flavor of maturity--cinnamon, mint, chocolate and pepper all swimming together. For the price, it's one heckuva deal. Great for sipping on its own or for fancy rye cocktails. A real winner. 92 points Beverage Tasting Institute: "Light amber color. Exotic aromas of wintermint, sweet pickle, pistachio praline, anise, and pink peppercorns with a rich, chewy fruity-yet-dry full body and a gentle finish suggesting mint green tea and five spice. Fascinating."

    NOSE:
The smell is strangely acrid at first and burns the nostrils just a smidge, but right after that come wonderful notes of maple and candied cherries. A touch of iodine and a hint of pepper and pine round out it's rugged cologne.

TASTE:
Up front it has all of the usual caramel, touch of oak and "whiskey spice" notes you'd expect, let it open up and you'll find it's quite earthy. There is some leather in there and a bit of of tobacco and charred toffee.

FEEL:
Warm, inviting, a little oily, and while it is mostly a smooth sip, it does have a bit of a kick that keeps things interesting.

FINISH:
Clean with a bit of citrus that hangs around for a minute and then it's gone.

OVERALL:
This is one of my favorite "daily drinkers", and at it's price, it's completely worth having this guy in your house. However, if you're looking for a really nice rye then I would suggest taking the next step up and grab a bottle of his big brother the Rendezvous or something from the Rocky Mountain Rye collection.
