From the southern, cooler part of the valley, but on a sunny ridge above the fog, a fascinating study in contrasts. It has brilliantly crisp, citrusy acidity, but is a fat, fleshy wine, with mouthwatering flavors of black cherries, cola, mocha and gingersnap. The scour of dusty tannins on the finish suggests this wine will hold for several years.
*Two stars* Klopp Ranch. In previous incarnations, the Klopp Ranch bottling has been the biggest and most bombastic of the Merry Edwards bunch. In 2001, it is again unstinting in its size and ripeness, but it is a bit better balanced overall and is defined as much by juicy fruit as it is by its riper traits. Fixed on keenly focused cherries and adorned with lots of complementary oak, it builds on the palate to a slightly coarse finish yet holds on gamely to its deep and convincing fruit.
