The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep, powerful wine laced with dark plums, spices, licorice and tar, all of which come together gracefully in the glass. A long, long finish adds to an impression of great balance and sheer pedigree. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. Vine Hill Ranch is nestled between Harlan Estate and Dominus. Not bad for neighbors. The Phillips family has owned Vine Hill Ranch since 1959, but records show the land has been cultivated as far back as 1884. With their inaugural 2008 release, the Phillips family is making the move from grape growers to winemakers. The Vine Hill Ranch team includes vineyard manager Mike Wolf and winemaker Francoise Peschon. The three vintages I tasted were all super-impressive. Vine Hill Ranch has to be one of the most exciting debuts in Napa Valley. (RP)
Dark ruby-red. Ripe, inviting aromas of cassis, black raspberry, plum and brown spices. Rich, suave and sweet, with a lush texture to the flavors of plum, forest floor and aromatic herbs. Finishes with broad, supple tannins that will not get in the way of enjoying this wine in its youth. The Phillips family began farming these vines on the western side of Oakville in 1959 and previously sold their grapes to such producers as Cakebread, Beaulieu Vineyard, Etude and Mondavi. (The Bond Vecina wine is from this estate as well.) Beginning with 2008, the winery peeled off a one-acre block of each of its vineyards to make wine under its own label.
