Dark red. Finely focused red berry, cherry, floral and mineral scents are given a pungent character by smoky herbs. The fresh, sweet strawberry, raspberry and bitter cherry flavors pick up dusty tannic grip on the back end. Finishes bright and brisk, with excellent persistence and echoing sweet red berry flavors that really cling to the palate.
We typically expect to see ripe and rather full-bodied wines from this Central Coast appellation, yet this bottling takes a markedly different path and is lithe and lively with a real sense of finesse. If a little less succulent and touch on the narrow side in comparison to its mates, it shows surprising last-minute richness and looks like a good bet to unfold with a few years of bottle age.
The 2006 Pinot Noir Vista Verde, with notes of herbs, damp earth, and sweet cherries, displays medium body and good acidity. (RP)
