The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) has turned out even better than I predicted last year. Abundant aromas of black cherries, black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice are followed by a wine boasting terrific intensity, full-bodied power, and an expansive, long, savory finish with no hard edges. The integration of wood, tannin, and acidity is flawless. This is a riveting example of Rutherford Bench Cabernet Sauvignon that should age effortlessly for 25+ years. (RP)
Slow to unfold, but once it does this reveals a firm, complex and fascinating mix of dried currant, melted black licorice, rich blackberry, sage and mineral. This full-bodied red expands on the finish, where the flavors unfold gracefully, ending with ripe tannins. Best from 2012 through 2024. (JL)
Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, sexy aromas and flavors of cassis, black raspberry, minerals, licorice and spicecake; almost liqueur-like but with terrific minty lift. The sweetest of these 2007s in the mouth, but balanced by penetrating fruity/peppery acidity. Finishes extremely long, with perfectly managed, harmonious tannins. This brilliantly delineated wine can almost be enjoyed now thanks to its exhilarating balance of sweetness and acidity but should age for 15 to 20 years with ease. (ST)
Saturated ruby. Jammy black raspberry, licorice, minerals, tar and violet on the nose, along with sexy oak tones. Concentrated, viscous and dense but given definition and energy by strong acidity. An element of saline minerality contributes freshness. This hugely structured wine comes across as more floral, salty and detailed than the Lotus. (ST)
