*Editors' Choice* A glorious wine. Based on Merlot, with nearly equal parts of the two Cabernets, it's softly smooth and delicious right now. Totally bone dry, yet rich and sweet in cherries, berries, chocolate and cedar, it satisfies on every level. Expensive, yes, but a relative bargain for a great Napa wine.
Very much reminiscent of fine claret in structure but charged with lots of well-ripened Napa Valley fruit, "Arise" is a tighter, more structured wine than its cellarmate below and offers up a different mix of dark currants, raspberries, briar and sweet loam. It makes good use of creamy oak and is always controlled in its richness, and, while it does come with the curt tannic warning that it wants plenty of patience, it will age without risk for as long as a decade or more.
(a Bordeaux blend based on 53% merlot): Bright dark red. Cassis, licorice, chocolate and loam on the nose, lifted by violet. Bright, chewy and dry on the palate, with cherry fruit complicated by herbs, earth, spices and licorice. The tannins are a bit dusty and the finish slightly herbal but this wine shows a lovely restrained sweetness and finishes with good shape and length.
Dense and firm, with black cherry and fresh loam aromas and flavors of dried berry and tobacco that show hints of dusty leather. May bloom given time. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2013 through 2017. (Web-2011)
