A blend 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot raised in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old barrels. The Capbern-Gasqueton 2009 has a very precise bouquet with ample red fruits: wild strawberry and raspberry with subtle earth and liquorice notes underneath and beginning to rise to the surface with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with good fruit concentration, slightly chalky tannins at this stage, good tension and mineralite coming through towards the finish with blacker fruits, one again with a hint of liquorice. Nice length and persistency. Great value + great wine equals happy customer. (NM)
From a 41-ha vineyard planted on high-lying gravel croupes. Vineyards are densely planted with 6,000 vines/ha and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Vines are on average 35 years old and the grapes were hand-harvested. One-third new French oak was used in maturation. Capbern Gasqueton has belonged to the Gasqueton family for 10 generations. They also own Calon-Ségur and this wine was made by the talented Calon-Ségur cellar team. Invitingly rich, warm dark fruit, some oak sweetness, particularly on the palate, though the fruit drives through the middle. Full flavoured and well structured but all finely balanced. Best to wait until the oak has settled back a bit.
Dark ruby. Perfumed, floral aromas of black cherry, violet and lavender. Enters bright and fruity, with savory black cherry and blackcurrant flavors, then turns increasingly tight and austere on the back, finishing with slightly astringent tannins and persistent, pure black fruit flavors. Though this is a little tannic at present, there's enough fruit here to allow for optimism: after an excellent 2009, this is yet another very good Capbern-Gasqueton. That it's taken very seriously by the staff at Calon-Segur, which owns this property, can be inferred from the 80% new oak used to age this wine.
