The 1999 is another impressive Piano di Montevergine. This is a touch more powerful and rustic than the decidedly elegant 2001, but it is just as engaging. Smoke, leather, licorice, wild cherries and rosemary develop beautifully in the glass, along with suggestions of ash and game that add character and complexity. The 1999 is a decidedly powerful Piano di Montevergine that is rewarding today and should drink well for another decade, perhaps beyond. (AG)
This takes no prisoners. Big and rich aromas of crushed blackberries and black pepper, with hints of minerals. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, opulent finish. A bit austere, but it's impressive. Best after 2005.
