A blend of 87% Zinfandel and 13% mixed black varietals (Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo and a few others), the stunning 2008 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard was produced from 81-year old vines cropped at one-half ton of fruit per acre. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by sweet notes of blue and black fruits intermixed with spice box, earth, licorice, incense and burning embers. This full-bodied, fleshy, unfined, unfiltered, captivating Zinfandel should drink well for 5-7 years. (RP)
A rare combination for Zinfandel--power with finesse. Distinctive aromas of leafy huckleberry lead to complex, balanced flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate and exotic brown spices. Ripe tannins sneak in on the finish. (TF)
Glass-staining ruby. Exotic dark berry preserves, dried rose, incense, olive and Indian spices on the sexy nose; smells like syrah. Then concentrated and powerful but not particularly weighty, with surprising acidity framing and lifting the spicy flavors of ripe mulberry, black raspberry, mocha and candied flowers. Finishes very long and strong, with a compelling lingering perfume, a hint of smoky herbs and youthfully tangy acidity. (ST) 92+
