K&L Notes

This opulent Heitz Cab comes from the Trailside Vineyard, a gently sloping belt of gravelly soils bordered by the Silverado Trail to the east and Conn Creek to the west. Acquired by the Heitz family in the 1980s, and made since 1989, the fruit these days is certified organic and aged in oak for 3 1/2 years. Its briary nose has hints of cassis, which come through on the rich and luscious palate, framed by a hint of Rutherford dust. This is a big Cab, from an excellent vintage.

Located along the Silverado Trail, this Certified Organic vineyard, owned by Heitz, has been producing the kind of wine that put Rutherford on the list of the great terroirs of Napa. The reason is simple: The naturally well drained gravelly soils, perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, and the masterly hands of David Heitz. The 2007, released in 2012 shows exquisite woodsy aromatics of lacquer, exotic incense, cherries, cassis and tobacco. Although still young, it a pleasure to drink now, but for sure we will be talking about this bottle 20 years from now.
