A triumph, one of the greatest Riverblock bottings in years. This always is a captivating wine, but the ’09 is particularly scrumptious. Although it’s quite tannic and acidic, it’s forward enough in raspberries, cherries and cola to enjoy now. But it’s bone dry and as elegant as California Pinot Noir gets. The balance suggests an ability to age for a good 10 years, if not longer.
Vivid ruby. Christmas spices, red berries and incense on the nose, with an exotic note of orange peel adding complexity. Sappy strawberry and raspberry preserve flavors are brightened by tangy minerality and complicated by a vanilla bean quality, with fine-grained tannins adding grip. Gains weight with air but remains lively and precise. The clean, nervy finish boasts outstanding clarity and spicy persistence. (ST)
A soft and silky red with sweet tobacco, flowers and strawberry skin. Full body, with ripe tannins and a medium fruity finish. Subtle, yet complex. Needs time to open.
Very rich and concentrated, this delivers layered flavors built around ripe plum, wild berry and black cherry, joined by wilted rose and spicy aromatics that are still a little diffuse, yet offer plenty of depth and complexity. Best from 2013 through 2022. (JL)
Decidedly different insofar as it smacks of root beer and a bit of exotic Asian spice in the nose, this very rich wine exhibits plenty of mass and lots of optimally ripened, black-cherry fruit. It starts out supple and fleshy then is nicely firmed as youthful acidity pops up at the finish, and, while the argument can be made that it is not yet wholly integrated, it is a deep and flavorful Pinot whose future is secure. Set it aside for at least a few years. *Two Stars*
