There's a reason that Aglianco is often called the "Nebbiolo of the South." This mighty grape makes incredibly powerful and extraordinary wines, particularly when grown in the volcanic soils of the Taurasi appellation. This version, from school teacher Sandro Lonardo and his wife Enza typifies that potential. This Aglianico bottling is declassified Taurasi DOCG, and is excellent for drinking 3-5 years from release. The structure of the "first wine" is chewy and intimidating for quite some time, and while this bottling is no wimp, is also happy to be enjoyed now. A profile of blackberry and raspberry is features savory characteristics of leather, cocoa, and volcanic minerality. A sense of freshness drives into the finish which features the firm tannins that can only be Aglianico.
