K&L Notes

From one of California's Syrah pioneers, the 2002 Phelps Syrah consists of 96% Syrah from a combination of estate fruit (63%) and fruit sourced from independent growers in Napa (37%) with an addition of 4% estate Viognier that was co-fermented. The wine was aged for nineteen months in French oak, 40% new, 60% two-year old barrels. From the winery: "In 2002, we co-fermented a small amount of Viognier, a white grape, with the Syrah, similar to what vignerons do in Côte Rôtie. The white varietal is known for adding complexity and floral attributes to the blend, and allowing the copious amounts of white pepper that is distinctive of Carneros Syrah to really shine through. The wine is rich in ripe fruit extract and has a long, silky finish."
