The irrepressible, schizophrenic Jack Russell terrier has his own cuvee, the 2003 Chien Lunatique, a 290-case blend of 91% Syrah and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, with most of the Syrah coming from Napa's Page-Nord Vineyard. Made in a style completely different from the Mendocino Country Syrahs, it exhibits more structure, earth and leather characteristics in addition to the floral, blueberry, and blackberry fruit notes. Good full ruby. Briary blackberry and black raspberry, graphite, licorice and mint on the nose. At once creamy and juicy, with an intense small-berry character. This has very good life and spine. Behrens & Hitchcock has switched to earlier bottling for some of its syrah and petite sirah cuvees. (ST)
