Tasting Notes

Maison Couly-Dutheil is undeniably one of the finest estates of the red wine-focused, central Loire region of Chinon, with eighty acres of prime Chinon vineyards as well as seven hectares of Saumur and Saumur Champigny. The estate's Chinon holdings are impressive indeed as they spread over three distinct Chinon terroirs: Sand and gravel along the Vienne River which produce light and fruit-driven wines, siliceous slopes and plateaus which impart a certain finesse and elegance to Chinon; and finally clay and limestone slopes which produce Chinon's most serious and profound wines. In the most successful years they select the most "feminine" barrels of Cabernet Franc for the La Baronnie Madeleine, a label in honor of Madeleine Couly-Dutheil, the great matriarch of this historic estate. 1989 is considered one of the great vintages for this release.

An old bottle of Couly Dutheil Chinon always holds up so well, and the price is always such a steal. The 1989 shows pretty notes of crushed flowers, leather, dry earth and meat. The palate brings tertiary flavors of sweet mushrooms, iron and salted meats. There’s still sweet cherry and cranberry notes, and the dusty tannins and acidity are still prevalent, this wine is sure to have another 5 years in it at least, just look at how well the 1976 is doing!

Straight from the dark deep cellars of Couly Dutheil – you can’t ask for better aging conditions. This wine is just hitting its stride with more time ahead of it as well. This is what a classic Cabernet Franc from Chinon is all about.

Absolutely stunning! A developed honeyed nose that strongly resembles of an old Bordeaux. Dark chocolate, smoked meat, and just a touch of bell pepper spices. Delicious.

I love having mature wine on the shelf at reasonable prices. This special Baronnie Madeleine bottling from Couly Dutheil made a huge impression on Cinnamon and I. She had prepared a white bean soup with a smoked ham hock, along with some Gruyere gougers for our Saturday night meal and requested a Chinon to go with it. When I saw this on the shelf, I couldn't resist! It turned out to be the best Loire red that either of us has ever had, with incredible sweet rosemary and black olive aromatics, completely resolved tannin and light, elegant, lifted body. The finish went on and on, and this Chinon went perfectly with the dinner. Wow!
