Where other California wineries perished during Prohibition, J. Pedroncelli, which was founded in 1927 by John Pedroncelli, Sr., managed to keep their vineyards going during that dark time by selling grapes to home winemakers as well as to a small base of businesses through the 1930s and 1940s. John Sr.'s sons, John and Jim, joined the winery in 1948 and 1955, respectively. In 1963 the brothers brought the winery from their dad, growing the vineyards and adding to their range through the 1960s. This 1969 bottling represents the winery's shift to modern winemaking. They began focusing on varietal wines in 1968, the same year they introduced stainless tanks to their cellar and bought their first French oak barrels.
