Another standout, the 2010 Syrah Eisele Vineyard is drop-dead gorgeous. A bevy of black olives and plums burst from the glass in an explosive wine loaded with varietal nuance and sheer power. The cooler vintage brought out the best. This is a marvelous, totally compelling wine endowed with massive concentration and depth. The addition of 3% Viognier and a small amount of stems add complexity. Black fruit, tobacco, savory herbs, licorice and menthol are layered into the brooding finish. (AG)
The flavors are explosive in this dense, firm and pure version, with expansive roasted game meat, herb, espresso, hot brick, black tea and mocha notes. Ends with dense, chewy tannins that cling. Should be a long-lived wine, best served by a few years of cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2030.
Good red-ruby. Restrained but complex nose hints at musky raspberry, tobacco, Brazil nut, crushed rock, smoke and pepper. Suave, smoky and fine-grained in the mouth, with an enticing sweetness nicely supported by ripe acids. Spreads out to saturate the mouth on the long finish, which features smooth tannins and a firm spine of acidity. I like the influence of the cooler vintage here, as this wine shows more convincing varietal character than in warmer years.
