*Highly Recommended and #12 on Top 100 Wines of 2013* Rich and powerful, but focused like a laser, with wild berry and toasty briar aromas that lead to ripe but complex flavors of black cherry, licorice and spicy orange peel. The tannins are big but fleshy. Drink now through 2022. (TF)
Another pretty wine, the 2011 Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard is a touch more aromatically expressive, nuanced and layered than the Pesenti. Sweet floral notes, herbs and red fruits are all woven together nicely in this attractive, mid-weight Zinfandel. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. This is a thrilling set of wines from Larry Turley, Ehren Jordan and Tegan Passalacqua. Tasting this wide a range of 2010 and 2011 Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs is like taking a master class in California terroir. The house style favors an expression of Zinfandel and Petite Syrah built on aromatic intensity and elegance, which Jordan credits to gentle extractions. At times, the wines come across as quite Burgundian in the way they express richness but not excess heaviness. Over the last few years, the wines have become a little more laid-back and less overtly ripe, which is a net positive given that the starting point for all of these wines is fruit of exceptional quality. The 2011 Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard is a little more lifted and aromatically expressive than the Pesenti. Dark raspberries, flowers, mint, licorice and sweet spices meld together in a pretty, polished Zinfandel. Hints of orange peel and white spices add an element of exoticism on the finish. (AG)
Good deep red. High-pitched aromas of crushed cherry, cranberry, raspberry and orange zest; smells high in acidity! Then vibrant and penetrating on the palate, offering a captivating balance between salinity and primary red fruit flavors. A bit youthfully aggressive today owing to its high alcohol, but the wine's rocky limestone lift gives the finish surprising precision.
