The 2011 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is another fabulous wine from Turley, and once again shows how great this vintage can be on Howell Mountain. Blackberries, blueberries and cassis, all layered with savory and aromatic notes, wrap around the palate. Graphite, smoke and ash appear later, adding further complexity, while firm mountain tannins support the gorgeous finish. This is a magnificent showing from Turley. (AG)
(just 13.7% alcohol, from vines planted at a dense 3-by-4-foot spacing and harvested just before the early October rain): Deep, saturated ruby. Distinctly northern Rhone-like (Cote-Rotie?) aromas of blackberry, licorice, smoke and flint. Very smoky and peppery in the mouth, with fleshy, savory tastes of dark berries and smoky minerals dominating. Perfect ripeness and sweetness of fruit here thanks to long hang time. Very long and broad on the smoothly tannic back end. A great Petite Sirah in the making; wonderfully rich and ripe for its relatively modest alcohol. (ST)
Wonderfully aromatic, with a nose of wilted rose petal, fresh-cracked black pepper and sandalwood. The chewy, dense tannins offer a good framework for the intense, focused notes of blackberry, huckleberry and boysenberry, which lend some serious push to the finish. (MW)
