(blended with 13% merlot; from vineyards all over Howell Mountain, according to winemaker Danielle Cyrot): Good bright medium ruby. Crushed cassis, tobacco leaf, loam and smoky, flinty minerality on the nose, with medicinal pepper, spice and licorice qualities that reminded me of Bordeaux. Then supple in the middle, with plum, graphite and mineral flavors dominating. I wanted a bit more mid-palate verve and lift. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and good length. Winemaker Cyrot did a very short total maceration in 2010, explaining that "we really needed to show restraint in 2010."
