The 2010 Grizzly is a smoking blend of 56% Grenache, 31% Syrah and 13% Mourvedre that comes mostly from the Coastview and Antle Vineyards in the Chalone region, with the balance from estate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Aged 27 months in a combination of large and small French oak, it exhibits a big, sweet bouquet of blackberry liqueur, blueberry, dried spice, black licorice and lavender. Deep, rich and full-bodied, with a seamless quality to its texture, it has notable freshness, no weight and a clean, classy style. (JD)
Bright ruby. Expressive aromas of raspberry and fresh flowers, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Supple and open-knit, offering sweet red fruit and violet pastille flavors that pick up smokiness with air. The peppery quality gains strength on the firmly tannic finish, which features notes of spicecake and red berry preserves. I'd have guessed that there was a bit more Syrah in here based on the wine's spiciness and structure. (ST)
Hearty and rustic, with dense loamy earth, dried berry, black licorice and dried herb notes, ending with chewy, gripping tannins. (JL, Web-2014)
