The sensational, rich, full-bodied 2012 Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge is one of the most concentrated, expressive and exuberant of these 2012 Zins. (RP)
From a windy, exposed site on Howell Mountain, the Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge is quite a bit more floral, lifted and chiseled than the Dragon, showing just how different two wines from Howell Mountain can be. Saline notes abound in a precise, crystalline Zinfandel built on energy and tension. (AG)
(15.1% alcohol; from a cool, high-altitude site, at nearly 2,600 feet): Good dark red. High-toned perfume of blackberry, mocha, coffee, wild herbs, licorice and pepper. Dense and juicy in the mouth, with lovely aromatic lift and energy to the red berry and spice flavors. Finishes with big, chewy, slightly drying tannins that call for a couple years of patience. Floral raspberry and mineral aromas lead to soft and voluptuous flavors in this Zin, which comes up short on power, but remains very fruit-forward and easy to drink. Drink now through 2018. (TF)
