Initially, this wine is all about strawberry tart, with layers of cardamom and white pepper as well as hints of blueberry and blackberry on the back palate. Offering high-toned fruit and acidity, it settles on the finish, becoming rich and full bodied in style, with final notes of nutmeg, vanilla and chocolate. (VB)
Ruby-red. A wild, smoky bouquet evokes dried red berries, cherry pit, licorice and cured meat. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering spicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a subtle herbal quality. Distinctly Old World in style, finishing with firm grip and excellent spicy persistence. Those used to the typically polished wines produced here might find this bottling perplexing, but Burgundy lovers should love it. (ST)
This blends together both upper and lower register aromas that include notes of pomegranate, cranberry, cherry, plum and a hint of cassis. Here too the mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is sleek though with a taut muscularity that is in keeping with the lovely sense of verve, all wrapped in an intense, dusty, balanced and focused finale. This is not a wine of finesse though it's not rustic either and if it can develop more depth than I envision, my score may be unduly conservative.
