K&L Notes

Another awesome bottle from Mount Edward. This comes from the "Muirkirk" estate vineyard in Bannockburn. This vineyard is in one of the most highly regarded grape growing "neighborhoods" in all of New Zealand. The Pinot Noirs from here have powerful fruit, wild thyme notes and deep brooding earthy characters that are quite distinctive. The vineyard is farmed using certified BioGro organic practices. Ferments are all done using wild yeasts, the wine is not subjected to fining nor filtration. This is a naturally pure expression of a unique terroir. Ryan Woodhouse (K&L NZ Wine Buyer)

*Update*- We managed to get a few more cases of this wine and it is drinking better than ever! (12/2/2015) Another majestic bottling from winemaker Duncan Forsyth at Mount Edward. This tiny vineyard sits in potentially the most highly regarded micro-region of Central Otago - Bannockburn. Here the combination of schist and heavy clay soils with the hillsides mostly northerly aspect produces wines of richness and intensity. This wine has a more opulent expression than the finer more elegant Morrison Vineyard release. The Muirkirk bottle has a mouth filling texture, riper red fruits, wild thyme, a "gamey" or "sauvage" character that so often signifies Bannockburn as the place of origin. The wine still has lovely balance and acidity but just seems more forward to me than the other single vineyard bottling. I have no favorite either way, but I love the exquisite sub-regional delineation captured by Duncan's gentle winemaking. Really special wines.

The "Muirkirk Vineyard" is a bit more muscular and shows its Bannockburn spine derived from the schist and dense clay soils there. Wild thyme and spice permeate the black raspberry and dark cherry in the nose with earth and some meaty accents. On the palate the wine already shows a layered complexity that is concentrated and yet poised with superb balance, structure and length.

Strawberry, thyme, red cherry, and rose leap out of this wine. Medium plus acidity with fine, easy tannin. Elegant and polished, a stunning example of Central Otago Bannockburn Pinot Noir. Love it!
