Engaging and seductive, the fabulously fragrant bouquet shows cherry, plum, spice and truffle characters with elegantly infused cedar notes. The palate is concentrated and powerful, yet focused and poised with impressively structure and length. The wine offers layers of silky texture and delicious flavours within a perfect frame of fine, firm tannins. The vineyard is situated on Felton Road in the Bannockburn district. At its best: now to 2022.
Dense, rich and complex Pinot Noir with masses of ripe plum and dark cherry over more subtle spice, oak and liquorice/savoury characters. Mouth-filling wine with a silken smooth texture. Very impressive.
Pale ruby-purple, the 2012 Muirkirk Pinot Noir has a yeasty nose over notes of mulberries, roses and raspberry leaves plus an undercurrent of Provence herbs. Medium bodied with a good backbone of grainy tannins and fresh acid, it finishes long and minerally.
Since 1997, in the mountainous region of Gibbston in Central Otago, Mount Edward has been making compelling rieslings and pinot noirs. Winemaker Duncan Forsyth is a firm believer of Central Otago, and furthermore, the expression of its subregions.
How good are these Pinot Noirs? Damn good...Compelling Pinot Noir is a matter of layered dimensionality where you don't discover everything about a wine in one sip. Happily wineries such as Mount Edward deliver such multi-dimensional goods. (Matt Kramer)
