One of my favorites in the lineup, the 2012 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard shows its 15% whole cluster fermentation with the darker fruit, ground pepper, herbs and background meatiness that shows on the nose. A rich, full-flavored, yet still seamless and elegant Pinot Noir, it has solid underlying structure and beautiful focus that comes through on the finish. It can be consumed anytime over the coming 5-7 years. This was another stacked lineup by the team of Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. All of these wines showed the more approachable style of the 2012 vintage, and had seamless, elegant characters. They're beautiful now, but I suspect they will evolve nicely given their overall balance. (JD)
The 2012 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard is the most complete of the four Santa Lucia Highlands Pinots. Beautifully layered in the glass, the Garys' offers lovely mid-palate juiciness and plenty of generosity. Dark red cherry, mint, violet and spice overtntes add nuance on a creamy, expressive finish. Very ample, ripe-cherry fruit is overlain with crème brûlée sweetness and suggestions of hardwood first in the nose and then again in the flavors of this wide-open effort, but, as things progress, the wine firms and shows a welcome acid edge. It would be going too far to call this one "narrow", but it is not as fat as first suggested, and, if a little held back by youth in the latter going, its balance and varietal bona fides provide it with good credentials for aging. *Two Stars*
An elegant, graceful style, with red berry, strawberry and watermelon notes that are also quite firm and concentrated, ending with a long, lingering finish. (JL)
