*Two Stars* Here is a Chardonnay that goes right to the fruity point even as it makes no apologies for ripeness and a full dose of sweet, lightly toasty oak. It is full and slightly supple with fine proportion and balance throughout and is marked by a sense of sophistication uncommon in wines of its richness and size. It is at once bold but well-measured and stays structured even as a touch of late-arriving heat peeks through at the finish, and, if an eminently satisfying companion to richer seafood and fowl in its youth, it promises to be better yet after a wait of some two to four years.
Shows intensity and vibrancy, exhibiting a complex mix of mineral- and citrus-laced green apple flavors, with subtle touches of toasty oak. Ends with a full-bodied aftertaste that should be better after a year. (JL)
Kosta Browne's 2013 Chardonnay One Sixteen is round, rich and very nicely layered in the glass, with attractive apricot pit, melon, Chamomile and honey notes. Creamy and expressive through to the finish, the 2013 should continue to drink nicely for at least another handful of years. A number of top-notch vineyard sources inform the blend, including Zio Tony, Charles Ranch, Searby, Ulises Valdez and El Diablo. (AG)
